Paul Quigg, born in 1958 in New Zealand, became a central figure in Australia’s HIV/AIDS activism after being diagnosed HIV positive in 1985. Initially involved in gay liberation and sexual health advocacy, he was one of the founders of the AIDS Council of South Australia (ACSA) and played a significant role in shaping services for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Quigg moved to Sydney in the late 1980s, where he became active with PLWHA NSW, serving on its executive and representing the organisation at national and international forums. He was also involved with the National Association of People with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) and contributed to policy development, treatment access advocacy, and anti-discrimination campaigns. His interview details his experiences of stigma, the importance of peer-based support, the impact of losing many friends, and his commitment to ensuring PLHIV voices were central to decision-making in the epidemic response.
