Joan Golding
Biography
Joan Golding OAM was a steadfast ally and advocate in Victoria’s early HIV/AIDS response. After her son Martin, one of the first people living with AIDS, joined the Victorian AIDS Council board, Joan volunteered with the organisation—becoming a vital support for families grappling with AIDS diagnoses. She regularly hosted support groups, spoke publicly to destigmatize the epidemic, and played a pivotal role in launching the Positive Living Centre in St Kilda by standing alongside community members in media and political advocacy. Known for her gentle authority, calming presence, and ability to soften public fear with kindness, Joan was awarded life membership by what is now Thorne Harbour Health in 1992 and received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1994.
