Biography
Gary W. Dowsett is an Australian sociologist whose research from the mid-1980s helped shape the cultural and social understanding of HIV in Australia. Through projects like the Social Aspects of the Prevention of AIDS (SAPA), he worked closely with AIDS councils and HIV-positive communities to strengthen prevention and health promotion strategies. Later, with the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS and at La Trobe University’s Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, he documented the lived experiences of gay men and people with HIV, highlighting the role of community mobilisation in Australia’s early HIV response.
