Quilt panel, part of Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt, in memory of Thomas Robert Small, cotton / paint / glitter paint, made in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, about 1992 Rectangular quilt panel, landscape orientation, with a pale blue background. The painted beach/sea scene shows a white haired man sitting under a tree, on the right hand side, wearing a floral shirt. There is a small white dog with the man who is looking out to sea at a 'Spanish galleon' looking sailing ship with a yellow 'halo' around it. On the left hand side are painted rocks with foliage. In the top centre the words 'Thomas Robert Small' are painted in yellow outlined in gold. The dates '8.9.1932 - 2.11.1991' are written in brown outlined in gold in the lower centre. This quilt was made by his Ankali carer, and others, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, about 1992. The Ankali Project recruits, trains and supports volunteeers to provide emotional and social support to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA), their carers, partners, friends and families. The Project is a division of the Albion Street Centre and is part of South East Sydney Area and Illawarra Health Services. In the Talkabout magazine issue dated July/August 2010 there is an article on The Ankali Project which includes the following: 'The Ankali Project. The Ankali Project was established in 1985 to provide one-on-one emotional and social support to people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The kind of support that volunteers provide has changed over the years, as have the needs of PLWHA. Volunteers can provide up to five hours per week with their client including face-to-face or phone support. Volunteers come to a weekly support group to give and receive support to other volunteers. The project is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is a part of the Albion Street Centre.' The Ankali project has a butterfly as an emblem. Notes provided in 2011 by a Douglas Knox a former Conveynor of the Quilt Project Sydney say that the maker was an Ankali volunteer carer who assisted his wife take care of him. He provided a brief description of Tom's life and the symbolism in the http://quilt.to/ quote 'Tom liked to dream about going off on an adventure on a sailing ship; that's why the ship has a golden glow. Tom and his dog under the tree are for the happy relaxed times, and the rocks on the left are for the dark and unhappy times. The dates of his birth and death in the sand are for the passing of time.'
