Visit the page ‘Doug' - Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt panel Rectangular quilt panel, landscape orientation, with a background of a blue green flowered batik style print. The letters of 'Doug' are made from red material with small white flowers and then machine appliqued in a half circle in the middle of the panel. Five flowers made with petals of padded yellow material and small print padded centres are machine appliqued onto the background. The numbers 4 6 57 and 10 6 89 are appliqued in navy blue material (dotted with orange flowers) onto two yellow panels at the bottom of the panel. This quilt panel was made by Doug's lover in Queensland, Australia in 1990. It may have been presented at the Unfolding ceremony in Canberra in 1990. It was presented to the Brisbane Unfolding in 1991. In a covering letter, the maker says 'Quilt making has helped me greive (sic), helped me appreciate, helped me say goodbye, but I wont forget.' Making the quilt had presented many challenges to the maker who had never hand sewn or used an old cantankerous machine. The yellow flowers were the worst problem because the yellow was sturdy and the background much softer. He was pleased with the overall results, especially the letters of the name which he wanted to do by hand -'big and awkward as mine are for small work.' The maker explained the materials used in the panel. It is made from a piece of Indian batik that Doug had used as a sarong. The yellow flowers represent Doug's love of flowers both in the garden and inside the house. 'Those we hold most dear live in our hearts forever.' -

There are three hearts on the wing of each kookaburra. All are facing to the left. There is an outline of a ring in ink next to one of the kookaburras. -
