Visit the page Nathan Daniel Martoo - Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt panel Quilt panel, part of Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt, in memory of 'Nathan Daniel Martoo', cotton / silk ribbon / metallic synthetic textile / glitter paint, made by family, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, about 1990 Rectangular quilt panel, portrait orientation. The background is mid blue with a border of rainbow coloured silk ribbon. The name Nathan Daniel Martoo is machine appliqued with gold textile in an arch shape with the words '28 years' in between. Underneath the arch is a map of the world, a plane and a fabric photograph of a statue. These are machine appliqued. There are six small stars in silver textile in various positions on the panel with a larger star in the top right hand corner with a 'trail' of silver glitter paint coming from the left side. This panel is in memory of Daniel Nathan Martoo, dates of birth and death unknown. Information received with the Quilt panel includes a handwritten note about Daniel Nathan Martoo. It states, in part, that the panel was made "for our son, brother, grandson, nephew and cousin", "the messages on the back are from his family who all wanted to contribute to the panel", "Daniel liked music, cooking and having dinner parties with his many family and friends, but his passion was travelling all over the world.", "the photo on the bottom of the panel is a photo of a statue. It is carved out of petrified wood and was one of Daniel's most treasured possessions. He got it on one of his first trips overseas and on his many other trips he always took it with him. His name is "Fred" and he is an ugly son-of-a-bitch. He stands approxamately (sic) one metre high and is very heavy. Daniel got him in Indonesia and he is some type of god. "Fred" was a pair but Daniel was unable to get the female statue that went with "Fred". / The map of the world with the plane circling it represents Daniel's many trips around the world. He had gone to at least 3/4 of the countries in the world. His most loved country was Scotland. / The meaning of the stars is because for a couple of weeks before Daniel died he kept saying the "Starman" was coming for him. The other stars are for other members of Daniel's family who we believe he is now with. The starburst and trail on the biggest star represents Daniel and the trail on the biggest star represents Daniel and the trail is the many lives he touched and continues to touch. Daniel's life was too full to put on one panel. Daniel's love for his family was immense and he died with his around him. His final journey is not alone as he takes a part of everyone he touched with him. Travel safely our darling." -
