Visit the page Tone Wieruszewski - Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt panel Quilt panel, part of Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt, in memory of 'Tone Wieruszewski', cotton / ink, maker unknown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, about 1990 Rectangular quilt panel, landscape orientation, on background of brown, yellow and mustard coloured material in wide stripes. A stylised design of Tone Wieruszewski's Za-Zen Lyrebird painting has been machine and hand stitched across the panel in black and patterned fabric design like stained glass (when viewed in portrait orientation with dates in top left hand corner). In the lower left corner '10.10.55' and '7.2.89' is hand printed in black ink and 'TONE WIERUSZEWSKI' is block printed in black across the lower edge of the panel. This panel is in memory of Tone Wieruszewski (b.10.10. 55 d. 07.02.87). The panel refers to 07.02.89 but this apparently is a mistake. Tone Wieruszewski is mentioned in a newspaper article 'The killer that is gathering in our best and our brightest', Sydney Morning Herald, Friday Dec 1 1989 p1. The article lists the many creative people who had died and includes 'Tone Wieruszewski. It mentions that he was a painter and sculptor.' (The article also mentions Keith Robinson). A short biography is given in the catalogue to his last exhibition. Tone Wieruszewski was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia and was the eldest of four children. His immigrant Polish father died when Tone was 5. He trained as a painter and travelled in Australia and the United States. He had an exhibition called Lyre Bird Dreaming in the Sydney Opera House Exhibition Hall in 1985. His exhibition He-art was a sell out and shown a month after his death. He was cared for in his studio by family and friends until shortly before his death. He died in St Vincent's Hospital and his last words were, 'before he declined to draw another breath', "Honeysuckle or jasmine, but alive not dead." His biography states that Tone 'confronted his illness with courage, hope and determination. And his eyes remained bright and drank in the world, through to his last sunset.’ -
