Quilt panel, part of Australian AIDS Memorial Quilt, in memory of Mathew, cotton / paint, made by the Sydney West Support Group, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia, 1992 Rectangular quilt panel, landscape orientation, painted scenic background overlaid with a black pullover with a red and white 'Fair Isle' pattern. This is topped with a red crocheted cap. The inscription 'Mathew, 1968 - 1992' is hand-written in the lower left corner, where there are two colouring pencils, a red one and a green one. A painted row of red and yellow triangles outlined with black is painted on both the upper and lower edges of the panel. The quilt was made by the Sydney West Support Group, co ordinated by Pip Bowden, Parramatta, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1992. Pip Bowden was a clinical psychologist in the AIDS unit at Westmead Hospital and the Parramatta Sexual Health Clinic. She began work in the AIDS Unit in 1987. The support group she was part of made about seven or eight quilts. They all have a distinctive zigzag patterned border. Of the quilts Pip says 'It's a ceremony in a way, a sending-off ceremony for people. I always think of the Viking ship, pushing somebody's boat off, the Viking warrior who was cremated with his ship. I think it's similar when people have a quilt made for them. I guess a bit softer, but also nice. I think the Quilt introduces a human element to AIDS. I think that's one of the most important things, that each one is an individual who means something to someone, who had a life' 'Matthew's would be the most recent one we made. Members of the support group contacted Matthew's parents and asked if it would be alright if they made a quilt. I think it was one of the nicest things that happened to the parents, to know that their son, who was beloved by them, was also seen as being very important to other people. It mad a bond with the parents. They gave a jumper and his special beanie for the quilt so that we could incoporate those. Things that had belonged to him, that everybody identified with him.
