Andrew was a co- founder of the Australian Aids Quilt Project, which he founded with Richard Johnson in September, 1988. On launching the Project, Andrew quoted Mother Theresa "There is a light in this world; a healing Spirit more powerful than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the Spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear the call and answer in extraordinary ways." Reference is made in the file of notes that Andrew made the first Quilt panel for his lover, Gordon Cass. He took part of the Quilt to the 5th International Congress on AIDS in Montreal in June 1989, and in his speech, read out a letter of support for the Quilt written by the Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke. In October, 1989, Andrew and the Quilt received the AIDS Trust Award for outstanding service to community awareness of the AIDS epidemic. Failing health caused Andrew to resign from the Quilt Project in March 1990. He was able, however, to participate in the unfolding of the Quilt at Parliament House, Canberra, in August 1990, in the presence of the Governor General Bill Hayden. This being regarded by Andrew as the high point of his life. In April 1991, Andrew returned to his birthplace, Perth, Western Australia, to be in the care of his family. Andrew was named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List and received the Medal of the Order of Australia on 10th June, 1991, shortly before his death in Perth on 20th June, 1991. The OA was awarded for his work in promoting community awareness about AIDS through the Quilt. At his funeral, the coffin was draped with the Quilt Banner that was made by Andrew and Richard Johnson depicting a map of Australia. There were many references to the Quilt in his funeral service as planned by Andrew. He has had at least three quilts made for him (qv).and has made several quilts (qv) -
